Recently, the kick-off meeting for the basic design undertaken by the CNCEC-TCC of the world’s first integrated “geothermal-to-hydrogen/ammonia/fertilizer” project — the Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) Project of the Kenya Green Fertilizer Program for Kaishan Group was held.
As the first green chemical project in collaboration with Kaishan Group, CNCEC-TCC aims to build a world-first demonstration project that integrates “hydrogen production – ammonia synthesis – fertilizer manufacturing” powered by geothermal energy. This initiative represents not only a significant achievement in deepening China-Kenya cooperation in the new energy and chemical sectors, but also another innovative practice by CNCEC in advancing the clean energy transition of the chemical industry and supporting Africa’s sustainable development.

The project will harness Kenya’s abundant geothermal resources to produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis, capture carbon dioxide from geothermal wells, and produce nitrogen via an air separation unit. These will serve as feedstocks for the production of green ammonia, urea, and calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) fertilizers. By enabling Kenya to achieve self-sufficiency in fertilizer production and enhance agricultural productivity, the project will also promote local employment, drive the development of upstream and downstream industries, and inject new momentum into the country’s economic diversification and green industrialization.
